Jhenaidah district is the gateway of southern part of Bangladesh. The previous name of the region was �Gangadighi.� The Ganga Dighi (current Baro Bazar) of Kaliganj upazila of the region once had been a famous port of India. It has been mentioned in the Greek history that oysters and muslin were used to be exported from this port in the ancient time. Indigo resistance movements (1860), Peasant Movement, Fakir- Sannayashi Movement etc are the remarkable chapters of the region. At the beginning of the British rule Jhenaidah was a police out- post and was turned into a police station in 1793. The Jhenaidah subdivision was established in 1862 and was turned into a district on 23 February 1984 after the liberation of Bangladesh. The Geo position of the district is between 23�15� to 23�45� North latitudes and between 88�45� to 89�15� east longitude.

Bordered By: Jhenaidah District is bordered by Kushtia district to the north, Jessore district and 24 Parganah of West Bengal (Indian State) to the south, Magura and a part of Rajbari district to the east, Chuadangadistrict and 24 Parganah of West Bengal to the west.

Administration: The area of Jhenaidah is 1964.77 Sq Km. It is under Khulna Division. There are 06 Municipalities in Jhenaidah named Jhenaidah, Mohespur, Court-Chandpur, Shyalkupa and Kaligonj. The number of Upazilla (sub district) in Jhenaidah district is 06, named- Jhenaidah Sadar, Mohespur, Court-Chandpur, Harinakunda, Shyalkupa and Kaligonj containing 67 Unions, 882 Mauzas and 1144 Villages.

Population: The total population of Jhenaidah district is 17,71,304 (Male- 886,402 and Female- 884,902), Sex ratio 100:100, Population Density 902/Sq Km and annual growth rate is 1.13%.

Literacy: The Literacy Rate of Jhenaidah district is 48.40% (Male- 50.50% and Female- 48.30%). School attendance rate is 56.40% for 5 to 24 years age group.
