Pabna district is located in the north western part of Bangladesh. There are many legendary about the naming of Pabna. According to one legendary, the Ganges eastern flowing called �Pabni� based on the origin of the name of Pabna. We came to know from another source that a notorious robber named Pabon or Pabna was once familiar in the region. Pabna was nemed after him. Some historians think that Pabna came from Padumba. A portion of historians think that the name Pabna came from Pundrubardhan. Once, the current area of the Pabna district was a part of the ancient Pundravardhan. The region was ruled by Gangaridhi, Maurja, Gupta, Paul, Sen etc dynasties. The region came under Muslim rule in 1205. From 1576 to 1727, 29 rulers ruled the region on behalf of Muhal dynasty. During the British East India Company period, Pabna district was formed as a separate district in 1828. The boundary of Pabna district was reformed in many times. After the liberation of Bangladesh, greater Pabna district was divided into two districts named Pabna and Sirajganj in 1984. The Geo position of the district is between 24�03� to 24�12� North latitudes and between 89�10� to 89�25� east longitude.

Bordered By: Pabna District is bordered by Sirajganj and Natore districts to the north, Rajbari and Kushtia districts to the south, Manikganj and Sirajganj districts to the east, Kushtia district and the Ganga River to the west.

Administration: The area of Pabna District is 2376.13 Sq Km. It is under Rajshahi Division. There are 09 Municipalities in Pabna named Pabna Sadar, Chatmohor, Ishardi, Sujahagor, Faridpur, Atgharia, Sathya, Vangura and Bera. The number of Upazilla (sub district) in Pabna district is 09, named- Pabna Sadar, Chatmohor, Ishardi, Sujahagor, Faridpur, Atgharia, Sathya, Vangura and Bera containing 73 Unions, 1083 Mauzas and 1562 Villages. 

Population: The total population of Pabna district is 25,23,179 (Male- 12,62,934 and Female- 12,60,245), sex ratio 100:100, Population Density 1062/Sq Km and annual growth rate is 1.47%.

Literacy: The Literacy Rate of Pabna district is 46.70% (Male- 47.80% and Female- 45.60%). School attendance rate is 53.40% for 5 to 24 years age group.
